Hosting company dead, is my mySQL database gone?

Hello,

My hosting company, serverway.net, appears to have gone belly-up with no warning.  I'm still able to access my site via FTP (but not cPanel), so I've backed up all the files I can access, but I don't see a way to access the database used by my nextBBS install.  Am I just hosed, or is there a way for me to back up the boards?

As far as I can tell, there's no customer service, no admin, absolutely nobody manning the ship at serverway.  So I'm totally lost as to what to do.

My site's located at oosl.net , and this is the error I get when I attempt to log in:

Error type: E_WARNING
Message: mysql_connect() [function.mysql-connect]: Too many connections
Location: /home/oznin/public_html/boards/adodb/drivers/adodb-mysql.inc.php (line: 354)

Thanks in advance.

I'm not sure how to make a backup without using cpanel (and I'm afraid the max number of users is zero, now that the host is dead).

Is there an easy tutorial anywhere that can run me through how to back up the database via telnet or FTP?

Good news, bad news
Well, the good news is that I was able to access my databases and back them up.  The bad news is that I can't figure out how to import them into my new site at bplaced.net.

When I try to import an unzipped dump of the database, I get this error message:
Fatal error: Maximum execution time of 30 seconds exceeded in /users/_public/phpMyAdmin/libraries/string_mb.lib.php on line 47

So I used WinZip to zip the file, and I got this error message when I tried to upload it:
Error in ZIP archive: CRC32 checksum is not equal with the value in header information.

How can I import the database to my new server? Am I missing a step somewhere?

Thanks.

Different good news, different bad news

I figured out how to import my databases, but when I went to log in to NextBBS, I got this error message:

Error type: E_WARNING
Message: ini_set() has been disabled for security reasons
Location: /users/oosl/www/nextbbs/user.php (line: 432)

Does this mean my host doesn't support NextBBS installations?

Wow you're really unlucky, tjm - and brave, too
Looks like your web host has disabled some php commands, such as init_set

The offending line is in user.php:

php Code:
  1.                 ini_set('session.use_trans_sid', '1'); // Only works in PHP5

Simply get rid of this line, you should see no visible difference other than nbbs working again
