A few issues with 0.5.0

Hi, I'm really enjoying the software so far. But the few issues I've had I thought I'd mention. These may be known, but there is no manual right now so I don't know what you've noticed or not noticed.

One thing I'd like to change, maybe simple, is some words here and there. It's only a problem when the text is called from a database, and I can't find the text anywhere. Like $pagetitle, for example. Also, when a user has not registered yet, the message at the bottom says "You've been banned." when it may just be their first visit. I don't want to make a bad first impression. The other text thing is small, but when you set the threshold for "Hot" topics, the text doesn't change on the page, it always says >10.

I've tried several methods, but cannot get skins to install. I'm sure it would take all of 5 minutes to write up a guide, but it's nowhere to be found here... Please let me know, because I really like this "test' skin right now.

The last issue is that when not logged in, the chat window doesn't call for $chat I guess, but I don't know which block or section that's in, or how to fix it. Also probably very simple, so a little explanation would go a long way. Before someone logs in, on default skin btw, the chat window actually doubles the whole website inside that container.

Anyways, I'm trying to get these problems fixed, but I also hope it's helpful in case you didn't know and want to improve those areas. I appreciate all the work that's gone into it so far, my users will appreciate it very soon. Thanks,

-Ben

It is very helpful, thanks.
Some of these issues are surprising, I suspect they may have to do with your local configuration - installing a skin for instance. How does it fail?

skins import

Hey Chris, thanks for replying. Actually I have no experience with all this so I didn't know what I was doing. I just didn't know where to upload the file to. It's working fine now. Actually, right now the only problem I'm having is that when a user is not logged in, the chat window contains another instance of the entire page, nested inside. Any idea what causes this? Thank you,

-Ben

what it looks like

An example of what I'm talking about:  (**Note: I made it like this by going and changing the skin of the nested window 5 times, normally it's one instance of the forum inside the chat window of the top layer forum page.**)

Please let me know how I can fix this, if anyone knows. Also the guests should be able to view the forum topics...

Thanks,
-Ben

Guests: they should be. If they are not, make sure that their 'Read' privilege is enabled for this forum.

The never-ending recurring chat window - please do this:
1. Open .htaccess
2. Remove this line:
ErrorDocument 404 /nbbs/index.php?do=unknown_page
3. Save .htaccess
4. Try again: you should see a 'page not found' error
5. Right-click in this area, and select 'Open Frame in New Tab' or 'View Frame only' or similar...this should replace the link in the address bar with the faulty link
6. Post it here

If this is too complex, is there a way I can access your board and test it myself? (As a guest would be enough)

test board

Hey chris,

I edited ,htaccess, but never got an error on the page. I have no problem with letting you access the forum. If that's easier, then please do. I'll PM the address to you. Thanks,

-Ben

Has this issue been resolved? I am having the same problem on a new install plus I can't register or login either.  CentOS5 is my os.

I have noticed that the error doesn't happen on some other people's computers, not sure why. I also cannot register when logged out. It says I can't access the page... but how can guests become members if they don't have access to the registration page? lol. Any hints chris?

Thanks,

Ben

This is what happens when I choose to display php errors.  I tried the suggestion but to no avail. This is also reflected in the web error log. It looks like the declaration will need to be modified.

My os is: Linux version 2.6.18-53.1.6.el5 (mockbuild@builder6.centos.org) (gcc version 4.1.2 20070626 (Red Hat 4.1.2-14)) #1 SMP Wed Jan 23 11:30:20 EST 2008

my MySQL is: mysql-5.0.22-2.2.el5_1.1

my PHP is: php-5.1.6-15.el5

PHP error

@tuxg33k:  See this topic why you get the Call-time pass-by-reference error.

You can do it if you really want it... - - - see my testforum (0.5.3)

I made the changes refrenced in the common.php as well as the inputparser.php files and it still does the exact same thing. I can't seem to find the cause of this issue. It simply has to be a PHP issue but what?

Still trying

Can we have an expert to help with this issue? If it is happening on new installs, then it may be a large issue. I have not been able to access anything on the forum except when I log in as Admin. The registration page is restricted, so guests cannot create an account. I also made a test account, and when logged in, that username didn't have access to anything either. It's like only the Admin has any access permissions. What is wrong with the security and permissions of my forum? Please post if you know anything that may help. Thank you,

-Ben

Sorry, I just have to add this: the success of any open source project rests on the activity of the community supporting it. I see the heading for this area says "Ask for help" but I'm not confident I can receive any help here. I like your software, but with an error in coding that doesn't allow anyone to register, the entire forum system is USELESS to me. I am still trying to resolve the problems here, but I am probably going to be disappointed with the support here and go to another solution.

* A screenshot or even a link to the forum would be nice... I don't have a clue what you're trying to say with the '$pagetitle' example...
* I've tried like everything on my forum, never got a message who says "You've been banned."... So once again, a screenshot or link to the forum would be nice...
* The "Hot" Topics thing is because it is set in the language file... to change it, open this file with a php editor or notepad:
   .../servers/1/lang/eng/main.php

I guess you've already found out... You just have to copy the file into the .../servers/1/uploads/   folder, and import the skin...
