What makes NextBBS so special?
|
I realized, chatting with some people earlier, that the public at large has not realized yet
what sets NextBBS apart.
I could mention many things: supports multiple boards, unique permissions system, integration with Zoints.com, and of course its dedicated community.
Today, I would just like to tell you about two things:
modules and
areas.
NextBBS is not a standard message board as it has been thought of by the creators of Invision or SMF.
These products do their job very well but their goal is not as broad as NextBBS'.
Simply put, our goal is to offer
the most inclusive community experience possible. And that means forums, chat and, more importantly,
full website design.
NextBBS offers the concept of '
pages'. You can create and maintain your web pages using the Admin Control Panel.
Pages do
not have to be static! You can program your own pages in php if you need to.
You can even include these famous
modules I've been teasing you with.
For instance, did you know that our homepage is one of these 'pages'?
Nothing was coded outside NextBBS.
We offer modules such as f
orms processing,
tagclouds,
wiki integration, and many
more.
Now, let's move on to our second topic:
areas
Oh, right: a segue would be welcome. Well, here is an example of a page using the '
fora' module; this is to give you a first hint that areas are not static little things that have to belong to 'categories' and so forth:

I hope you clicked the link above. It's speaks volumes.
Areas are much more that forums or categories. Actually there is no such concept as 'forums' and 'categories'. It's all
areas that morph gracefully depending on the usage you assign to them.
Of course, we support an
unlimited hierarchy of areas.
But, more interestingly, we also offer two concepts you may not be familiar with: '
relative areas' and '
classified areas'.
Relative Areas are meta-areas, meaning they can contain
the topics of more than one related area. It's all seamless to the end-user but you can group your areas any way you want to. You can even
post in these areas without having to visit the related areas first.
Classified Areas are a different feature, I am now talking about areas that are dynamically updated
based on how users decide to tag their posts.
You can create your own sets of tags, or '
Classes', and let the users tag a given topic as they please.
The topics posted that way are
dynamically redistributed to the corresponding
Classified Areas.
Take a look here for a couple -non-boring, I promise!- tutorials on these features:

Believe me, my friends, this is just a quick overview of some of the features that set NextBBS apart but there are many more features that are more subtle, such as moderation happening directly on the current page, thanks to Ajax, and many more.
Cheers,
-Chris
