You do not need to remove XP to do this.
What you would be concerned with is the Win boot.ini file, and as long as the device is a slave it's not even read. Only the boot loader installed on your primary drive will be executed.
After booting with that configuration, you are free to repartition/format your now-slave drive if you wish to.
